When most people think of the Quad Cities, a community nestled along the Mississippi River stretching between Iowa and Illinois, they think of rolling plains and farmland. While this small town feel is definitely present in the towns that make up the Quad Cities (Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, East Moline, and Rock Island), there are also some real urban issues present today. In recent years, the Quad Cities has become a haven for refugees, bringing international culture and diversity to what was once seen as a mostly white community. With an increasing refugee population, there exist many new social issues. One of the most prominent is a lack of productive, safe activities for children whose parents may be searching for work or working multiple jobs. YouthWorks is able to support many local organizations doing great things in the Quad Cities. Many of these organizations provide summer programming for kids who would otherwise be unsupervised and unfed during these months. In addition to these organizations, we are also able to partner with locals meeting the needs of the homeless and the hungry in the area. By serving in the Quad Cities, youth are able to learn about poverty and apply what they have experienced on their trip to their community back home. You will serve in the local community as well as have time to worship with your team and other church groups.
